Justin Furstenfeld of Blue October’s Most Personal Album Yet

“Any Man In America,” which will be released August 16, is a letter to his daughter, says singer Justin Furstenfeld. It details the hardest period of his life – loosing his rights as a father, a bitter divorce, and the longing for his little girl to know the truth. Blue October also walked away from a major label deal for this album. Justin talked to The Comet about change and growth.

Just Furstenfeld is passionate. He’s passionate about his music, his life and his daughter. He describes the past few years as the hardest he’s been through. Because of the bitter end of his marriage, he’s only seen his daughter for three months out of the past four years. Not because he didn’t want to, but because he couldn’t. His daughter has been in Nebraska and he continues to fight the court system to see her more.

“It’s a whole letter for my little girl,” Justin says. “I’m sorry I had to tell it this way, but i want her to know the true story.”

He channeled his frustration and creativity into “Any Man in America,” the seventh Blue October studio album. Not only was his personal life in turmoil, he also changed up his professional life. The band was previously signed to Universal Records but opted to move on and release “Any Man in America” independently via their own label Up/Down Records. Why?

“I just could not do a 360 deal and give up 20% of my touring and merch, so I said no,” he explains. “I’m still good friends with all the people at (Universal).”

The first single off the album is poingant track, “The Chills.” Check out the video:

His custody experience has lead him to be an evangelist for Fathers’ Rights as well as Shared Parenting.

“Men are expected to be deadbeat dads, which is just (unfair)... Single parents need to be allowed to spend the same amout of time with their children,” Justin says. “It’s not just about guys, it’s about single parents who care for their families…I want to speak up and be positive about it. President Obama I want you to step up to the plate. “

Blue October will kick off a summer tour in their home state of Texas on August 17. Click here for dates.
