Exclusive Blog: The Trews Hit Nashville
photo

Canadian rockers, The Trews, toured with Kid Rock earlier this year and have been on the road ever since. Here, guitarist John-Angus MacDonald, blogs about seeing the latest Guns N’ Roses tour and taking in Nashville.

We found ourselves with a Sunday night off in Nashville – that great music town – turns out Guns’n’Roses are playing in town at the Bridgestone Arena. Now, the version that’s currently touring is a far cry from the band that recorded “Appetite for Destruction” – and will be inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next year – but Axl is one of the great all time rock’n’roll eccentrics and talents and I will never pass up an opportunity to hear him sing those songs that meant so much to me at a pivotal time in my life. “Appetite” may be the single solitary reason why I picked up the guitar in the first place and I know I’m not alone on that. We even had the pleasure to open for this incarnation of Guns on a couple of East Coast dates back in ’07.

Axl didn’t go on until 11pm and played until after 2am, not typical behavior for an arena band but certainly not atypical of Axl. The show was good, a little overblown and over the top at times, I could have done without the three separate solo guitar marathons, but good. Axl sang great.

We found ourselves back at the Bridgestone arena two nights later to take in a hockey game (Preds vs Coyotes) with some radio contest winners from Edmonton, AlbertaTyler and Alyse. Turns out Tyler was actually just calling in an accident on the highway and happened to be lucky caller number 10 to be magically whisked away to Nashville to take in a hockey game with the Trews. Turns out he had heard of us before and was a fan (thank god!) and they were both really good people - still, too funny and very Spinal Tap.

The road” When it’s good it’s fun, when it’s bad it’s funny. Oh, and the Coyotes won 3-2.
