Standing Up to My Bully
“Glee” Gone Kinderwhore. Really?
photo

Why? Someone please tell me why, the minute a female becomes successful she takes off her clothes! I don’t understand why being half naked, sexed-up and verging on pornographic is pushing the envelope. Keep your clothes on, smile and be beautiful – now that’s daring!

So GQ does a sexed-up photo shoot of “Glee” stars Dianna Argon and Lea Michele, posing the women in sexy school girl outfits that pedophiles find hot. The shoot has come under fire from parents groups including the Parents TV Council and even Katie Couric (thankfully, as far is I know Katie has never taken off her clothes for a photo shoot).

The worst part of this entire thing is Dianna’s supposed apology she posted on her blog. She writes:

In the land of Madonna, Britney, Miley, Gossip Girl, other public figures and shows that have pushed the envelope and challenged the levels of comfort in their viewers and fans…we are not the first. Now, in perpetuating the type of images that evoke these kind of emotions, I am sorry. If you are hurt or these photos make you uncomfortable, it was never our intention. And if your eight-year-old has a copy of our GQ cover in hand, again I am sorry. But I would have to ask, how on earth did it get there?

I don’t even know where to begin to address the naïveté and stupidity of this apology. What stands out most to me is her claim that parents should prevent eight-year-olds from having GQ. Um, Diana, this is the internet age, hello? The photos are EVERYWHERE. And every child can see them!

I’m not defending Britney or Miley either. I just thought better of “Glee.” The numbers are staggering of how many young girls are molested and raped by perverts playing into the school girl fantasy. Thank god their favorite TV show now tells them to dress sexy and spread their legs. Go ‘Glee.’

Wouldn’t some people say that this is a young woman embracing her sexuality (i.e. power)? I completely agree with you, and perhaps this “embracing” needs to evolve into something more than the T & A that has become more and more stagnant and boring over the past three decades.

I really think this has been overblown.  First, both Dianna Agron and Lea Michele are 24.  Second, Michele’s role in Spring Awakening was far more revealing than this photo shoot (as she dropped her top and simulated sex in her role of Wendla on Broadway).  As for the show itself, I continue to be confused as to why anyone thinks this is family fare.  While the music is fun, the content is decidedly 15+ and in my opinion not appropriate for the tween and younger set.

I get what you’re saying about the whole school girl fantasy thing and agree with you there.  Even so, I still feel that the sexualization of real teens (such as what the Twilight folks, their middle aged female fans and magazines like Entertainment Weekly did with a then 17 year old Taylor Lautner) is far worse than a group of adults well past their teen years doing a risque spread in a magazine that is targeted at adults.
