Mustache for Your Bottle or a New Social Network

My new obsession is Kickstarter. Did you know you can fund mustaches? It’s true. They are plastic things called “Pop’s ‘Stache.” You place one on your water, or more appropriately, beer bottles so it appears that you have a mustache. According to one of my friends, mustaches are all the rage. I didn’t get the memo. Pop’s ‘Stache is already 100% funded by 80 regular people on Kickstarter. Those who just gave $5 to the cause mustaches numbered by the designers!

I’ve been watching Disapora closely on Kickstarter. The company rose up last month in the midst of the Facebook piracy brouhaha.

Disapora was founded by a four young programmers from NYC’s Courant Institute with the lofty goal of spending the summer building “an open source personal web service that will put individuals in control of their data.” Sounds like they are taking on Facebook to me.

They asked for $10,000 and would up with $200,642 in donations from 6,479 backers. According to the website, 2606 people pledged $25 in exchange for “a CD now, and a bunch of cool Disapora stickers, and an awesome Disapora t-shirt.”

In a blog post, the founders say they are now hard at work.

“We started with the goal of working hard, staying focused, and making great software, and that’s exactly what we’re going to do. With the surplus of attention and monetary support, we are now able to position ourselves amongst some of the best developers around. You may not hear too much from us in the coming months and we will try our best to provide regular updates, but our silence means we are hard at work.”

We shall see what the summer brings.

What is fascinating about this is that anyone with a good idea can get backing.

Recording artists are catching on to this as well and Pledge Music is leading the way (more on that later).

Personally, I may go for Pop’s ‘Stache.
