Seven Days in Music: James Fanco in Drag, Video Ringtones and Ticketing

Time to take a look at what happened in the music biz – for the week ending Feb 25, it was all about the Oscars, Cher, Ahmet Zappa and Stubhub.

The biggest controversy this Oscar season, was not who was or was not nominated for Best Actor. No, it’s been all about Diane Warren being snubbed for her Cher “Burlesque” anthem “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me.” It won the Golden Globe for Best Song, but got no love from the Academy.

Oscar co-host, actor James Franco, decided he wanted to pay homage to the great Cher and Diane and do the song as part of his hosting duties, dressed in drag of course. There was also reportedly a plot to have Cher come out and kick Franco off the stage and finish the song herself.

Sadly it was pulled from the show, but not before Franco posted the audio file on the inter-webs. It’s bad, really really bad.

Here’s Franco’s cover of “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me.” It’s audio-only, although it looks like a video window:

Tickets, tickets, tickets. There seems to be no end to the ticket wars. AEG has gotten into the game with its own product via Outbox. Ticketmaster is pushing paperless tickets. And Stubhub has had enough.

Bascially, paperless tickets prohibit fans from trading tickets outside of the system, so Ticketmaster can keep track of all the tickets and pocket all the fees.  This was initially intended to prevent brokers from reselling tickets for huge prices. But this also prohibits a fan from selling a ticket to friends or other fans outside of Ticketmaster. Stubhub, the biggest fan-to-fan ticket seller, is encouraging fans to fight for their rights to sell tickets however they like.

In a letter to users, the Stubhub team writes:We can fight this. The Fan Freedom Project was created to give fans like you a platform to voice your outrage toward restrictive paperless ticketing, and to learn what measures you can take to protect your rights. We’ve signed on to support the cause. And we hope you’ll lend your voice to the fight today by registering at http://www.fanfreedom.org.

Remember when the ringtone market was going to save the music business? And then, not so much? Well, there is still hope. The ever creative Ahmet Zappa (musician, actor and novelist, among other things) and his digital company have come up with video ringtones. Your phone rings, you favorite tune plays and you get a cool animation as it rings.

There is hope yet.
